Skilled Migration

Skilled migration is designed for people who have qualifications, work experience and skills that may contribute to Australia’s workforce needs. Many skilled visa pathways are points-tested and require applicants to meet specific eligibility criteria before they can be invited to apply for a visa.

The first step for many general skilled migration visas is submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect, the Department of Home Affairs’ online system for managing skilled migration interest. SkillSelect may be used for points-tested skilled visas, business visa pathways and, in some cases, to assist with employer-sponsored opportunities.

Before submitting an EOI, applicants should carefully assess whether they meet the requirements for the relevant visa subclass. This may include occupation eligibility, skills assessment, English language ability, age, work experience, qualifications, points score and state or territory nomination requirements.

If an applicant receives an invitation to apply for a skilled migration visa, they will usually have a limited time to lodge a complete visa application with supporting documents. Each visa subclass has its own eligibility requirements, so it is important to understand the correct pathway before submitting an EOI.
