Partner Visas

Partner Visas

Partner visas are for people who are married to, engaged to, or in a genuine de facto relationship with an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. These visas allow eligible partners to live together in Australia, either temporarily or permanently, depending on the visa pathway and the applicant’s circumstances.

A partner visa application usually requires strong evidence of the relationship. This may include documents showing the financial aspects of the relationship, shared household arrangements, social recognition of the relationship, commitment to each other and the history of the relationship. The Department will consider whether the relationship is genuine, continuing and meets the relevant legal requirements.

The correct partner visa pathway may depend on whether the applicant is inside or outside Australia, whether the relationship is married, de facto or prospective marriage, and whether the applicant meets health, character and visa history requirements. Because partner visa applications are evidence-heavy, careful preparation is important.
